I started my Urban Vegetable Garden on Saturday May 15, 2010, with a trip to Lowe’s Home and Gardening supply. They are a big outfit yet cost effective for getting things when you know what you want (I wouldn’t be caught dead in Home Depot). Their prices are good and to my surprise they had excellent customer service. I purchased 1, 3 square foot bag of garden soil by Kellogg and 1, 2 square foot bag of Miracle Grow garden soil along with 5, 5 gallon plastic painters pales. Next stop was “Sheridan Gardens” nursery in Burbank, California, where I bought Tomato, Pepper, Eggplant, and Herb plants. They were a little pricey but they had very healthy plants and good customer service. I shall list them on the Greener pages next week. I shall list the varieties of plants specifically next week as well.

I drilled 10, 5/16th inch holes on the bottom of each pale and then I cut rounds out of brown paper bags to place loosely on the bottom of each pale so that dirt wouldn’t fall out of the holes until they erode naturally. I filled the pales up with 3 parts of Kellogg’s soil to 1 part Miracle Grow, planted the vegetable plants in them and placed them in the shade until the evening cooled off everything so I could water them and place them in the locations I desired.

In the pictures below you shall see everything needed to do this, including drill for the holes in the bottom of the pales and a razor knife to cut out the paper bag circles.

I shall report progress
